We live on poisoned land, in bodies filled with plastics and chemicals such as PFAS. How can we live and find love and solidarity amidst these ruins? In this Autumn Issue, Luca Hopman and Marguerite van den Berg aim to learn from foremothers and contemporary heroines and set out to find the courage to protect each other.

We are The Office for Feminist Love Letters. We write love letters for futures of solidarity. We write them for you. For us. We are in need of political love. 

Our office celebrates feminist alternatives for exploitation and violence. Alternatives that were once, are made now or are imagined. Futures of solidarity. The office aims to create loving alternatives and is not here for biting critique. This is a writing practice, a network, a fungus, an improvisation and a collection of imaginations at once. It is about knowing our foremothers and taking care of children.

This is a lover letter we wrote for Dublin women organizers. Bernie and others organize against mould in housing. The love letter was published in a zine that we made with a team on the issue of Mould in public housing: Mould Works (June 2025). You can find the zine here. Toen ik twaalf jaar oud was, in 1993, zond de VPRO een televisieserie uit over het leven van een bijstandsmoeder: Mus. Annet Malherbe speelde een moeder die met haar twee zoons in Amsterdam woonde en zich met veel humor staande hield. Wij keken thuis de serie met het hele gezin. Mus, zo leerde ik recenter, werd geschreven door Selma Vrooland, die lang zelf van de bijstand had geleefd met haar zoons en over haar leven in de jaren tachtig een column schreef in Vrij Nederland met de titel Onder aan de ladder, onder het pseudoniem M. Mus. De columns beleven hun veertigste verjaardag (een eerste bundel verscheen in 1984) en zijn het lezen nog altijd waard vanwege de humor en schrandere machtsanalyses. Stel je voor… een Rotterdam zonder armoede. Een liefdevol Rotterdam. Een warm Rotterdam. Een Rotterdam waar iedereen met waardigheid kan leven.
